Primary resources are the preferred resource (as opposed to seconday sources) to use when you're writing your paper or speech. However, the difficulty lies in gaining access to or traveling to a special collection library, archives or museum. "The Library of Congress American Memory project and other digital initiatives provides free access through the Internet to the treasures of the Library’s collections that document America’s history, culture, and creativity. Across the country, the archives, cultural institutions, museums, and libraries of many states are collaborating to create similar projects. They provide unprecedented access to materials that document local and regional growth and development as well as a look at the cultures and traditions that have made individual states and communities unique. This Magma September 8th article details how a group of researchers studied the course-shopping behavior among nine Los Angeles area community college students. Demographic characteristics, behavior influenced GPA and course completion issues were examined.

Identity thieves targeting college students

"Protect yourself against identity theft. One out of five data breaches occurs at colleges and other schools," according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. What can students do? This Baltimore Sun September 10th article is timely given the start of the fall semester.

The JCTC library staff often finds social security cards, diplomas, drivers licenses and other "official" documents laying next to computers, photocopiers, textbooks, and group study rooms. Be sure to protect your wallet, purse and personal information while studying and attending classes here at JCTC. With that said, have a safe and successful fall semester!

Security breaches on Facebook

Some of you may or may not have heard of this, but Resourceshelf, a newsletter for information professionals, reported that Facebook underwent a brief security lapse late last month. A security lapse made it possible for unwelcome strangers to peruse personal photos posted on Facebook. If anything is to be learned from this, it is make sure you're aware any photo you upload to the Web, let alone Facebook, is transmittable UNIVERSALLY. Breaches in security can happen.

Publishing Opportunities for Undergraduates

So what types of articles can students publish? Book reviews and news-type feature articles for the JCTC Quadrangle and local papers such as the Courier-Journal, Voice-Tribune, Louisville Defender, and The Review to name a few. Jefferson Community and Technical College’s literary magazine is the jefferson review. The review, published each spring semester, includes works by students, accepts poetry, short fiction, and creative non-fiction. Contact any one of these faculty members: charles.ainsworth@kctcs.edu or davidl.cooper@kctcs.edu or jean.tucker@kctcs.edu for editorial guidelines.

There are alternative means of publishing which are equally impressive: becoming a conference presenter, presenting a poster session and authoring a blog within your field of study. Faculty members can be wonderful mentors to help you tailor your writing to your audience.

Did you know there are journals open to student publication? Depending on your topic, you may want to check the editorial guidelines for these publications:

Economics- University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics is a refereed electronic journal run by undergraduate students from Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University. Previous articles include: The Gender Wage Gap in the Economics Profession, English Language Proficiency and Wage Rates of Mexican Immigrants, and Are Art Students Nicer than Economics Students?

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences- Journal of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences is an annual periodical published by the Psychology Department of Fairleigh Dickinson University at Madison, New Jersey. Articles in ANY topical area of psychology are considered including, but not limited to: Behavioral Neuroscience; Social; Sport; Industrial/Organizational; Clinical; Substance Abuse; Personality; Learning; Psychopharmacology; Health; and/or Medical.

Science- Journal of Young Investigators, Inc. is dedicated to the presentation of undergraduate research in science, mathematics, and engineering. Incorporated as a non-profit, entirely student-run corporation, JYI's staff members currently represent over 30 different academic institutions.

Trying to access research databases (i.e. EbscoHost, InfoTRAC, Proquest) from home or work? Here are steps to access periodical research databases from off-campus:

1) Start at the JCTC Library/LRC webpage http://www.jefferson.kctcs.edu/divisions/libraries/default.php

2) Under the heading Library and Resource Center you'll see the caption
Off-campus Access please click here

3) Click there and a popup window will appear promtping you to input your JCTC student ID username and password. Select Login.

4) A list of databases will appear which you can then access from off-campus.

Some students have had to use microfilm for resources in your classes. We have several magazine back issues located on microfilm including Advertising Age, American Journal of Nursing, American Quarterly, Esquire, Fortune, New Yorker, National Geographic, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times and U.S. News & World Report. The microfilm is housed on the 2nd floor of the LRC along the wall adjacent to the stairwell facing the staff parking lot. Here's a simple Flickr tutorial for using the microfilm reader.

RSS Feeder/Aggregates: What's all the talk about Web 2.0 and social software?

For those of you new to blogging, a blog is a webpage in which content is added in a daily journal-like fashion. Each new entry includes a date and time which the entry was added. This blog was created as a communication tool for LRC patrons to access information resources both here at the Downtown LRC/Library as well as off-campus, even on the Internet.

You can view this blog's news on a daily basis using an RSS Feeder (some RSS examples include Bloglines, GoogleReader, Newsgator, Feedburner). Because spam has become so prevalent in email, RSS Feeds were designed to offer privacy so you can reduce spam cluttering your email inbox. Here's a simple step-by-step format of how to set up an RSS Feeder using Bloglines.com as an example:

1) Create an account at Bloglines.com. Select "Sign up now it's free!" in the middle of the the circle on the landing page to get to the easy form. Complete the necessary screen information.
2) You will then be asked to go to your email to validate the new account.
3) Subscribe to feeds- When you click on the validation, you will be taken to Bloglines. Click on My Feeds tab in the upper left corner. Bloglines will subscribed you to their news blog.
4) Now you'll want to subscribe to this blog-

Select the Feeds tabs in the upper left hand corner.
Select Add button.
In the middle frame, type in the blog's URL: http://jctcdtlib.blogspot.com/
Click on Subscribe.
You have some options for how you want to display this blog on Bloglines. When you're complete making your choices, select Subscribe.

5) Make a bookmark or Add to Your Favorites on your computer of your new RSS Feeder so you can easily check this and other blogs, wikis, etc. on a daily basis.

Ebscohost & ProQuest: New RSS and Email alerts direct to your inbox

Needing to find journal articles on your topic but prefer not to have to start your search from scratch everytime you log on a computer? Proquest has debuted Search Alert which will send article results to your email when new documents matching your search are added to their database. You can select notices either daily, monthly, weekly or every three months. You can stop notices anytime between 2 weeks and 1 year. Set Up Alert feature is located on the hit results page next to the yellow envelope icon.

Ebscohost has introduced its own version of article alert without clogging up your email inbox. Ebscohost introduced an Create Alert for this Search which sends article alerts to your RSS Reader/aggregate (i.e. GoogleReader, Bloglines, etc). I conducted a search on food irradiation and at the top of the search results, there is an orange tab. By clicking on it, you can create a feed link which can be dropped into your RSS Reader/aggregator. Unlike Proquest's choices of options, Ebscohost will only allow daily notices for up to 2 months. Nonetheless this is a great tool for receiving updated journal articles on your subject to compile bibliographies, news alerts, book reviews etc.

Invisible Web lists of authoritative sites

Sure Google and Yahoo will bring up hit results for your paper, but how do you know there any good? Well aside from taking a web evaluation workshop by JCTC-DT librarians, you should understand that there are sites which Google, Yahoo, Teoma, Webcrawler search engines either can't or won't include in their collections of hit results. This is commonly referred to as the Deep Web or Invisible Web.

Librarians' Internet Index reports in its blog that in October 2006 the OEDB compiled an annotated list of authoritative websites on the "invisible web." The "invisible web comprises databases and results of specialty search engines that the popular search engines simply are not able to index." Topics include search engines, art, online books, business, consumer, finance, government, international, law, health, science, and transportation. Librarians' Internet Index is listed. From the Online Education Database (OEDb), a site that offers reviews of online schools and degree programs.

Eating disorders and childhood: Newly released study

The Librarians' Internet Index reported a December 2006 news release discusses two studies about childhood eating disorders, one that "confirm(s) that pro-eating disorder Web sites may promote dangerous behaviors in adolescents with eating disorders" and another that "indicates that pre-teens with eating disorders tend to lose weight more quickly than adolescents with the condition and weigh comparatively less at diagnosis." Welcome Back: Finding Your Classroom

Happy New Year! One of the greatest sources of frustration (and most frequently asked questions in the library) is knowing where your classes are being held. You can find class room locations in your PeopleSoft account. Here's how:

1) Logon to the JCTC webpage.
2) Select PeopleSoft tab in the upper right hand.
3) Type your JCTC user ID login name and password.
4) Select Self-Service.
5) Select Enrollment Status.
6) Select View Class Schedule. The class schedule which appears does not have the room locations so....
7) Select the bullet for Weekly Calendar.
8) A new screen will appear showing the building location and the room location. The room location will show 5 digits, but omit the 1st two digits (i.e. RM 00203 LIB = Room 203 in the Library).

Should you have further questions, feel free to contact the Central Service Desk for assistance. The library has several copies of the JCTC-Downtown campus maps at the Central Service Desk.

Statistics: NationMaster, CIA World Factbook, StateMaster

Information specialist Mary Ellen Bates has identified some useful websites detailed in her newsletter which are helpful when you're in need of statistical information.
1) Nationmaster was "developed by Australian Luke Metcalfe who pulled some of the more obscure data within the CIA World Factbook. The site offers some fascinating lists (most taxed, most militaristic, etc) as well as newsmakers and factbites. NationMaster includes data from the World Bank, various United Nations entities, OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), World Trade Organization, and so on." 2)NationMaster unveiled a sister site StateMaster. Statemaster's look and feel is the same as Nationmaster only its information is retrieved from national sources such as the US Census Bureau, FBI, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Homework Help: Assignment Calculator

One of the most difficult things for college students to grasp is time and project management. Assignment Calculator is a great tool (courtesy of the University of Minnesota) for students to use when trying to estimate how long they should plan for writing a research paper. Just pop in the date you receive the assignment and the assignment due date. This calculator prints out a week-by-week look at what part of the research process students should focus upon.

How do I obtain a book or article from another library?

Interlibrary loan. Print the book or article citation. The citation should include the following information for a book: author, title, publisher, copyright date, edition (if appropriate) and location (if appropriate). Article citations should include but not limited to: article title, author, journal name, volume, issue, date of publication, pages.

Write your name, email and phone number and submit this information to the Interlibrary Loan at the Central Service Desk at the LRC. Don't wait til the last minute; Interlibrary loan can take a minimum of 7-10 days. However, the service is free to JCTC students. More information about Interlibrary Loan is available on the library's website.

HHMI's grants are awarded to advance science education at all levels, especially in the area of biomedical science. Why Can't I Find Articles in the Databases On My Topic?

Some possible suggestions you may want to consider:
1) Be sure all your keywords are spelled correctly.

2) Omit punctuation, articles (a, an, the) and prepositions (for, of, to, etc.)

3) Connect key concepts using Boolean operators (AND, NOT, OR)
AND- connects 2 or more concepts to retrieve information (e.g. children AND fear)
OR- broadens and selects either or both concepts (e.g. children OR kids)
NOT- narrows and excludes the second concept (e.g., children NOT kids)

4) Try using double quotes "" (e.g."child anxiety")- Why?
Searches two or more words in exact order.

Social Issues: Underinsured & Risk Behaviors

For those conducting research on the state of uninsured US citizens, one of the resources not to be overlooked is Health Literacy Style Manual . "This resource, published by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with direction from the Southern Institute on Children and Families, discusses reasons for uninsurance, sources of coverage, as well as the costs and consequences of uninsured coverage." Another popular topic we often get lots of reference questions is risky teen behaviors. Prevention Communication Research is a database, published by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, "indexing government reports covering risk behaviors such as smoking, drug and alcohol abuse. Reports can be generated focusing on gender, race, ethnicity and age of research participants." How Do I Obtain a Book/Article From Another Library?

Before you request an interlibrary loan, if it's an article you're looking for, you may want to try and search another database. For example, if you found the citation/abstract on EbscoHost, try to see if the article is available full-text on Infotrac, Proquest, KYVL, etc. Check the another library catalog if you are trying to find a book not housed here at JCTC-DT.

If you are a student in good standing, you may request the material through Interlibrary Loan. Print out the abstract/citation (article) or library catalog record (book) of the title you are requesting. Write your name, email, and best number to reach you on the printout. Submit the printout to the Librarian at the Central Service Desk.

Once the form is submitted, the Interlibrary Loan staff will look for the item/s you need at member libraries. If the material is located, you'll be contacted when the material/s is available for pick up. This is NOT a RUSH service: please allow a minimum of 7-10 days for processing.

How Do I Mark a List of Books on the Library Catalog?

OK, you're at home...you're trying to research a book for your paper on immigration. Gotta run to class but you don't want to loose your results. Just like you can save a Marked List on Infotrac, EbscoHost or Proquest, you can do the same on our library catalog (a.k.a Voyager). Here are the steps to take:

1) Open the library webpage http://www.jefferson.kctcs.edu/divisions/libraries/default.php and Search for Books.
2) Change Limit search to a single location: Select Jefferson CTC- Downtown
3) Search for: Type in your keyword, title, author or subject heading. Be sure to change the Search by (Right side of search field) if needed.
4) When the results page appears, on the left column marked #, check off the items you want to save.
5) Scroll to the bottom of the screen for Records: make sure the Selected On Page is bulleted.
6) Look to the right side, and select Format for Print/Save.
7) Voila!

Country Studies: Library of Congress

The Library of Congress:Country Studies web site contains "the online versions of books previously published (1988-98) in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Army. Because the original intent of the series' sponsor was to focus primarily on lesser-known areas of the world or regions in which U.S. forces might be deployed, the series is not all-inclusive. At present, 101 countries and regions are covered. The date of information for each country appears on the title page of each country and at the end of each section of text."(website) There are some missing countries (i.e. East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Soviet Union) as well as Canada, France, UK and the United States, but the portal's emphasis is geared to Third World or more obscure countries.

Finding Magazine, Journal & Newspaper Articles in the Library

Some things are worth repeating, especially if you've been checking the March archives. The library subscribes to many periodicals (aka, journals, magazines and newspapers) which are not located on the 1st floor of the library. Many are located online within our electronic databases (i.e. Infotrac, EbscoHost, Proquest, etc). Here are a few steps to help find journals, magazines and newspapers online:

1) Logon to the JCTC Library webpage.
2) Search Electronic Databases.
3) Click on the blue hyperlink for the database you want to search (e.g. Infotrac).
4) Select the individual databases (e.g. Academic OneFile, Health Reference Center Academic, etc.)
5) Type in your keyword, term or phrase in the search box.

Your eyes hath not deceived you. There are 2 sites you may want to review if you are searching for images and photographs. As always, be sure to cite your sources.

New York Public Library Picture Collection Online is a "digital collection of images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints, and postcards taken from NYPL's in-print collection dating back to 1915." (website) You can search by name, title, subject, source and author. Need to order images for commercial use? There is a fee to cover permissions and licensing.

Picture History describes itself as..." a digital library of high quality images and footage illustrating more than 200 years of American history. The site has indexed images of maps, postcards, cartoons, stereo cards, video and audio clips among others. Resources may be accessed through preselected image categories or through keyword searches, date, medium, color, original format or photographer." Congratulations! Pamela A. Carman, Milton, business management major and Ashley C. Safie, Louisville, physical therapy assistant major were honored as members of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System's (KCTCS) 2006 All-Academic Team during the organization's fifth annual student achievement dinner, Tuesday, April 11th, in Lexington.

Two students from each of the 16 KCTCS colleges were chosen for the All-Academic Team based on a rigorous selection process that focused on academic performance and a written essay. Each member of the All-Academic team received a $500 gift from KCTCS and scholarship opportunities to continue their education from 16 Kentucky public and private universities. Together, the scholarships are valued at more than $500,000.

Country Studies: CIA World Factbook 2006

One of the first resources to research when conducting research on countries is the CIA World Factbook. Celebrating the 59th (2006) anniversary of its parent organization, the Central Intelligence Agency, The World Factbook 2006 continues to present summaries of countries within the the National Intelligence Survey studies. This past May, the site recognized Montenegro and Serbia as two separate countries, not necessarily reflected in many print reference resources. The site recently expanded its summaries of capital cities, transnational issues and weights and measures. (website)

Career: Occupational Outlook Quarterly

One of the first points of reference when searching for information about a career or profession is the Occupational Outlook Handbook, published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The print version is generally published every 2 years and lists long term employment and job growth plus job descriptions for more than 270 occupations. You can find the print version on the 2nd floor reference section of the DT-Library with the call number: HF5381 .U62. You may also access the electronic version of this reference book on Netlibrary (HF5381 .O29 2004eb)which is the 2nd hyperlink "Search for eBooks".

If you still want to delve further into an emerging career or believe there are rapid changes in a particular profession, take a look at Occupational Outlook Quarterly (OOQ). This micro version of the print publication presents brief news articles and a grab bag highlighting little-known professions.

American Women Through Time

March is Women's History Month so here's a sneek peek into the American Women Through Time website. The site, authored by Ken Middleton of Middle Tennessee State University Library, offers two approaches for the study of specific time periods in American women's history. First, a timeline and second, a collection of research resources. Middleton is also the compiler of the 2004 ALA-RUSA award winning, American Women's History: A Research Guide. "This research guide provides citations to print and Internet reference sources, as well as to selected large primary source collections. The links to primary sources on the Internet, categorized into seventy-five sub-fields, make this a goldmine for students studying American women’s history." Google Scholar Review

Another tool for researching scholary journals is a free resource sponsored by Google (once again..) Google Scholar is a "freely available Internet search engine for academic resources in all subject fields. The Google Scholar robot crawler searches content in peer-reviewed journal literature, books, dissertations, preprint repositories, academic society papers (if available), and technical reports. Yet, its lack of authority control for basic data elements such as author names and publication titles greatly limits its ability to sustain a serious scientific and technical research audience as an exclusive source of literature. Its speedy search engine and voluminous output are tradeoffs that a researcher must consider weighing against accuracy and thoroughness in a literature search." Child Care & Early Education Research Connections is a free, Web-based resource for researchers and policymakers. It offers an easily searchable, multidisciplinary database and archive of more than 7,500 reports, journal citations, instruments, datasets, fact sheets, state data tools and more, and provides guidance on understanding research and assessing research quality.

"Over the last few months, we have been improving the infrastructure of our database and search capacity. We are now in the process of organizing a Beta test of our improved site, and we would like to invite librarians with an interest in early education and child policy issues to be part of the Beta test group.

The Beta test will be an opportunity for us to gather your feedback on the Web site and search results. Our tentative timeframe for Beta testing is March 20th-31st. Avoiding Theft in the Library

Just a brief reminder to keep track of your belongings while sitting at library computers, studying or making photocopies. Not a great idea to leave books, bags, cell phones and certainly purses unattended while using the library.

Searching Strategies: Google-style

The February 20, 2006 issue of Time Magazine featured a cover story on the remarkable rise of Google (In Search Of The Real Google: An inside look at how success has changed Larry and Sergey's dream machine. Can they still be the good guys while running a company worth $100 billion?).

We're not bragging the virtues of Google here, but the article did offer some useful search tips you could use while Googling. You may want to try them on Yahoo, HotBot, Lycos, Webcrawler or any other search engine.

1) Looking to see if your package arrived? Type in the tracking number for any major shipping service.

2) Is your flight on time? Enter the name of an airline followed by a flight number to check the plane's status.

3) Is it going to snow? Type in "weather" and any city and state for a quick illustrated report.

4) How good is Brokeback Mountain? Type in "movie: Brokeback Mountain" (or any other film) for an instant compilation of published reviews.

5) What's $500 worth in Euros? A new currency-converter feature replies to input like "$500 USD in euros."

Landmark's Citation Machine

Every now and then, someone comes up with a tool to make students' life a whole lot easier. Landmark Citation Machine is a great site to help you cite either a print (book, diary, newspaper, etc.) or electronic resource (subscription database, website, online magazine, etc.). Sponsored by David Warlick of The Landmark Project, the primary goal of this site is to make the proper crediting of information property so easy that it becomes a habit, not a laborious task that we stop doing outside of school."

The way it works is you select the type of source, input the data fields required, and the citation machine kicks out either APA or MLA citation. One note of caution: the site was last revised in January 2004, so consult your Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers to doublecheck your citation.

Criminal Justice: Survey of State Criminal History Information Systems, 2003

International Federation of Libraries and Archives: Information Literacy for Everyone

The International Federation of Libraries and Archives sponsored the High-Level Colloquium on Information Literacy and Lifelong Learning, held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt, last November. This symposium was also sponsored by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), and the National Forum on Information Literacy (NFIL). The final report of the conference argues:

"the existence of information holds little to no value to people who do not even know what information they need, much less whether it exists or not, or how to locate, evaluate and effectively use it."

Librarians continue to extol the virtues of information literacy and this report further justifies information literacy's impact on economic development, health, citizenship, governance and quality of life on a global scale!

1) Go to the JCTC Library webpage.

You can save information about the current records displayed:

1) Mark the record(s) you are interested in by clicking on the white box on the left side of the screen. A checkmark displays.
2) Click Selected on Page in the Save Options section.
3) Select the format in which you want to save the record(s): ASCII text or MARC format.
4) Click Format for Print/Save icon to save the record(s)to display your marked records.

How to Find a Book in the Library Catalog (Voyager)

It never fails this time of the year (midterm) that the library gets inundated with requests to find a book on every topic ranging from Frida Kahlo to waitressing. So in case you've forgotten, here's a refresher course:

1) Open the library web page http://www.jefferson.kctcs.edu/divisions/libraries/default.php
2) Click on the blue hyperlink Search for books
3) Change Limit Search to a Single Library to Jefferson CTC Downtown.
4)Enter your search term in the Search field. You can search using keywords, author, title, journal title or a Library of Congress Classification subject heading. We keep LCSH books in the Reference section (1st floor), Central Service Desk and in the e-Classroom. Ask a librarian more about it.
5) Be sure to change the Search by field if you need to.
6) Hit Search and your results will display with the most relevant titles first.

Common myths about the library catalog:
1) You don't need to type as many words in the search field as you may type in Google, Yahoo or other search engine. The catalog is built on the Library of Congress classification system so that's the vocabulary it's looking for.
2) LC (Library of Congress) subject headings work best; broad keywords the next best.
3) You won't find journal articles in the library catalog. You will find journal titles that the library subscribes to.
4) It does not contain course schedules for an upcoming registration or only books published in Kentucky. The library catalog contains all books, audiovisual material, CD-ROMs, and DVDS that the library houses.

Still not finding what you need, request time with a librarian to help you with your search strategy.

Anti-Spyware: Google & Microsoft

Google has launched a page of what it considers to be essential downloads. You can find the page at http://pack.google.com. As you can expect, the pack is skewed toward Google products, however, it does show a wide variety of essential software, including anti-spyware, that is free.
Don't forget about Microsoft's free anti-spyware product (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.msp). Remember: do not try to download these on library computers; recommended for home-use.

How Do I Mark the List of Books I Find on the Library Catalog?

OK, you're at work...you're trying to research a book for your paper on narcotics. Gotta run to class but you don't want to loose your results. Just like you can save a Marked List on Infotrac, EbscoHost or Proquest, you can do the same on our library catalog (a.k.a Voyager). Here are the steps to take:

1) Open the library webpage http://www.jefferson.kctcs.edu/divisions/libraries/default.php and Search for Books.
2) Change Limit search to a single location: Select Jefferson CTC- Downtown
3) Search for: Type in your keyword, title, author or subject heading. Be sure to change the Search by (Right side of search field) if needed.
4) When the results page appears, on the left column marked #, check off the items you want to save.
5) Scroll to the bottom of the screen for Records: make sure the Selected On Page is bulleted.
6) Look to the right side, and select Format for Print/Save.
7) Voila!
